In Vancouver hate crimes have increased dramatically, particularly against people of Asian descent. In the city Anti-Asian hate crimes have spiked to unprecedented levels. In 2019 there were 12 reports. But in 2020 there were 280 incidents.
Tania Visinitin of the Vancouver Police Department said the hate crimes peaked in May. "The trauma and psychological impact from these incidents trumps everything," she told CTV News.
John Horgan the primer of British Columbia called the report "deeply troubling. "Our work includes moving forward on anti-racism legislation, but there's more for all of us to do in our stand against racism and hate."
In Vancouver the Chinese Cultural Centre has been repeatedly vandalized, and a 92 year old man with dementia was attacked.
The B.C Prosecution Service said only 1 person was charged with a hate crime. Out of 100's of hate incidents only 1 person was charged.
In America Anti-Asian hate crimes have been increasing too. 1,226 incidents took place in California since the pandemic began. In San Francisco an elderly Asian man was attacked and killed.
Many believe the Trump's xenophobic rhetoric is the cause of these hate crimes. Trump repeatedly called COVID "the China virus. Let us know in the comments what your opinion is on all this.
